The jump in infections was driven by a spurt in cases in Kerala and Maharashtra, with the two states accounting for over 60% of India’s fresh cases in the week. In all, 10 states showed a rise in weekly Covid cases. The country is likely to record more than 25,300 new cases in the May 30-June 5 week, the first time since March 7-13 that the tally has exceeded 25,000. India had logged 17,361 cases in the previous week. Kerala is likely to log over 8,000 fresh cases, up at least 65% in a week.
Maharashtra reported 7,253 new cases, more than double (130%) the previous week’s tally of 3,142. It detected 1,494 new infections on Sunday, the highest single day tally in 106 days (since February 19), with Mumbai’s daily count inching towards the three-figure mark at 961.
Although cases continued to fall in Delhi, the capital still logged the third highest tally among states this week with 2,419 cases, down 12% from the previous week (2,757).
In UP, cases are likely to register a modest rise of around 5%. India recorded 21 fresh deaths from the virus during the week, with data from a few states yet to come in. Last week’s toll was 16. These figures don’t include fatalities from Kerala
