The mercury dipped below zero in the valley, the Meteorological Department expressed the possibility of heavy rain and snowfall

Jammu Kashmir News: These days the outbreak of severe cold wave continues across the country. The Kashmir Valley and Ladakh region are also not untouched by this. There the temperature has reached below zero, due to which the situation of severe cold wave continues. The minimum temperature across Srinagar was recorded at minus 4.5 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

While Drass was recorded as the coldest region in Kashmir where the mercury dipped to minus 27 degrees Celsius. An official of the Meteorological Department said that the minimum temperature in Srinagar was about 2.1 degrees Celsius below the temperature this year in Srinagar.

Kashmir is in the grip of toughest winter of the year

Significantly, these days Kashmir is in the grip of the harshest winter of 40 days. Which is locally known as ‘Chillai Kalan’. Chillai Kalan which will start from 21st December and will run till 31st January. After this, ‘Chillai Khurd’ lasting 20 days and ‘Chillai Bachha’ of 10 days will start.

On the other hand, if we talk about Gulmarg, then the minimum temperature there was recorded below minus 9.5 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature in Pahalgam was recorded at minus 11.4 degrees Celsius. Drass in Ladakh, the second coldest place in the world after Russia’s Siberia, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 27.6 degrees Celsius. While Leh recorded minus 16.8 degrees Celsius and Kargil minus 18.6 degrees Celsius.

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of moderate to heavy rain in Jammu and Kashmir from Sunday. An official said that a fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir region from January 16 and another Western Disturbance from January 18 and due to this, light to moderate rain is being predicted in the valley.
