CHANDIGARH: The CBI arrested a Himachal Pradesh high court judge’s daughter, Kalyani Singh, on Wednesday in connection with the murder of a national-level shooter and advocate, Sukhmanpreet Singh Sidhu, alias Sippy Sidhu.
Kalyani was working in 2015 as an assistant professor in a government college in Chandigarh. Demanding custody of Kalyani for 10 days, the CBI managed to secure remand for four days to interrogate her to identify the killers, recover the weapons and the vehicle used and find out the roles of others in the murder, which had shaken Chandigarh.
Sippy Sidhu (35) was shot dead in a park in Chandigarh’s Sector 27 in September 2015. The CBI claimed Kalyani had a close relationship with Sippy Sidhu and wanted to marry him, but his family had rejected her proposal.
The CBI alleged that Sippy Sidhu had leaked objectionable pictures to the parents and friends of the accused. Angry and embarrassed, Kalyani allegedly contacted him on his mobile on the evening of September 18, 2015, asking him to meet her at a park in Sector 27 on September 20, the day he was shot four times with a 12-bore gun. The last four digits of the registration number of a Maruti Zen car used by the assailants to flee had been recovered from the site.
The CBI said evidence showed Kalyani was present with Sippy Sidhu at the park and was seen running away along with unknown assailants. The CBI said she was evasive during earlier interrogation. “She was found to be deceptive in the polygraph test on questions related to the murder,” the CBI said.
The CBI investigation concluded that Kalyani, in conspiracy with unknown people, allegedly murdered Sippy Sidhu. “She was arrested after observing all legal formalities around 11.30 am on Wednesday,” the CBI said.
The UT administrator transferred the case from the Sector 26 police to the CBI on April 13, 2016.
Sippy Sidhu’s family members Sid they had suspected Kalyani since day one and thanked the media for keeping the case alive. “We are very happy and hope we will get justice now. The CBI has accepted our point in the murder case,” Deepinder Kaur Sidhu, mother of Sippy Sidhu, said,
On the other hand, Kalyani’s advocates opposed the CBI’s move to seek remand on the grounds that the agency had earlier filed an untraced report. “She had earlier joined the investigation but nothing incriminating was found against her. The application for remand is opposed on the grounds that a fresh course of implicating the accused is nothing but an abuse of process of law,” the defence counsel said. The court allowed the defence counsel to remain present during the investigation in the police station without actively participating or interfering in the process after he requested that she be permitted to meet him while in police custody and be allowed to use her own clothes.
