CHENNAI: MDMK leader and MP Vaiko demanded that the Union government roll back the Agnipath scheme.
The cabinet gave its nod for the scheme on June 14. The central government’s primary objective is to launch the Agnipath scheme to reduce the expenses of the nation’s defence force towards retirement benefits and pension of the personnel. It was the opinion of the experts, said Vaiko in a press release.
He said the recruitment process for the short-term service was unjustifiable. The BJP government’s scheme resulted in protests by youth in Bihar, Haryana, Jharkhand and Rajasthan. In Bihar, the protesters set railway coaches on fire, Vaiko added.
Amidst growing unemployment, the youngsters want to join the Indian Army and other defence forces. However, the contractual basis recruitment would demean the Indian defence forces. “Moreover, the BJP government has an ulterior motive in bringing in such a scheme. It has created a doubt whether the government is trying to execute RSS’s agenda to saffronise the defence force,” said Vaiko.
