NEW DELHI: Breaking the traditional apathy towards introduction of new technologies, the railway ministry has now turned to start-ups to find solutions to improve efficiency and safety of rail services.
Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday launched the ‘Innovation Policy’ to leverage technologies developed by Indian startups to some of the generic concerns and announced that the railways will invest Rs 50 crore in start-ups annually.
The minister said unlike other such collaborations, the intellectual property rights (IPR) for innovations will remain with the innovator. “The policy is not just limited to the idea. Indian Railways will follow it through to the product after proof of concept and scaling it up, doubling the grant support and finally adoption of successfully developed product or technology for regular use and even support for two to three years,” the minister said.
The railways’ investment in start-ups will focus on getting solutions to problems such as rail fracture, headway reduction, rail stress monitoring system, automation of track inspection activities, development of analytical tool by using digital data for improving passenger services, track cleaning machine and use of remote sensing, geomatics and GIS for bridge inspection among others.
The railways will provide a grant of up to Rs 1.5 crore to each innovator on an equal-sharing basis with provision of milestone-wise payment. As per the policy, trials of prototypes will be done in the railways and the funding will be enhanced to Rs 3 crore to scale up deployment on successful performance of prototypes. The national transporter will also give assurance to place developmental order to the innovators.
Launching the policy, Vaishnaw said, “Great innovative solutions may churn and many technological challenges can be resolved if start-ups collaborate with Indian Railways. We have launched an innovation programme under Start-up India today and undertook 11 common problems to resolve.” He said that throughout the entire developmental journey, railways’ field officers, RDSO, zonal and railway board officers will continuously support and hand-hold the innovators.
