UP topped the states by sending 11 unopposed winners, followed by Tamil Nadu (six), Bihar (five) and Andhra Pradesh (four). Three candidates each won from MP and Odisha, two each from Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Telangana and Jharkhand and one from Uttarakhand. BJP has won the maximum seats, 14, followed by Congress and YSR Congress, which have won four seats each. Among other winners, DMK and BJD won three seats each; AAP, RJD, TRS and AIADMK two seats each; and JMM, JD-U, SP and RLD one each. Sibal is the lone independent to win the polls.
Elections were announced for a total of 57 Rajya Sabha seats. Now, contest for the remaining 16 seats will be held on June 10. Of the 11 Uttar Pradesh winners, eight are from BJP while three, including Sibal and Chaudhary, are from the SP quota.
The two AAP winners from Punjab include environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal and entrepreneur-social activist Vikramjit Singh Sahney.
With two victories from Bihar, the number of RJD members in Rajya Sabha would increase to six, while the number of JD(U) members will remain unchanged at five.
In Jharkhand, Mahua Maji and Aditya Sahu, from JMM and BJP, respectively, were elected unopposed.
In Madhya Pradesh , all three candidates who filed nomination papers from the state — BJP’s Kavita Patidar and Sumitra Valmiki and Congress’s Vivek Tankha — were elected unopposed. From Chhattisgarh, Congress candidates Rajeev Shukla and Ranjeeta Ranjan were elected unopposed.
