The encounter started late Saturday night when a joint team of the armed forces, following a tipoff regarding the presence of militants in Drabgam village of Pulwama, started a massive cordon and search operation and came in contact with the militants. Police claim that the militants opened fire triggering an encounter.
On Sunday morning, police informed that three militants were killed at the spot. They were identified as Junaid Shergojri, Fazil Nazir Bhat and Irfan Ahmad Malik, all residents of Pulwama district.
Inspector General of Police in Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, informed that Shergojri was involved in the killing of a policeman Reyaz Ahmad who was shot dead on May 15 this year and of a non-local labourer in a brick kiln of Budgam district on June 2. He informed that two AK-47 rifles, a pistol and other ammunition and incriminating material were recovered from the spot. In another brief encounter in Palpora area on the outskirts of Srinagar, police informed that LeT militant Adil Parray hailing from Ganderbal district of central Kashmir was killed. Police claim that Parray was involved in two recent killing of policemen — Ghulam Hassan Dar and Saifullah Qadri — in Srinagar.
According to the police, at least 100 militants were killed in Kashmir Valley so far this year and have detained, questioned and summoned hundreds of youngsters across the Valley allegedly to crack the networks suspected to be involved in the recent targeted attacks.
This year, Kashmir witnessed 19 targeted killings, including that of off-duty policemen, panchayat representatives, instagrammers and minority community members.
