NEW DELHI: The Indian Women’s Press Corps has voiced its concerns over the spate of FIRs against journalists, the latest being against Times Now journalist Navika Kumar in Maharashtra, for “objectionable comments” a guest made during a news debate she was anchoring.
Batting for journalists’ rights when they perform their duties, IWPC questioned the “indiscriminate use of government power to criminalise journalistic activity” and said this threatens press freedom.
“While there can be no question that the Constitution and Constitutional values have to be upheld rather than undermined while exercising the Constitutionally guaranteed freedom of expression, indiscriminate use of government power to criminalise journalistic activity also poses a serious danger to press freedom, an essential element of the freedom of expression,” the IWPC statement said.
