NEW DELHI: Following a visit by an Indian delegation to Afghanistan earlier this month, the government announced Thursday the deployment of a “technical team” in the Indian embassy in Kabul to ensure effective delivery of humanitarian assistance India is providing to the Taliban-ruled country.
The deployment marks the return of Indian diplomats to the embassy in Kabul
for the first time since the government withdrew all Indian diplomats and other staff members after the Taliban took over Kabul on August 15 last year.
“India has a historical and civilizational relation- ship with the Afghan people. In order to closely monitor and coordinate the efforts of various stakeholders for the effective delivery of humanitarian assistance and in continuation of our engagement with the Afghan people, an Indian technical team has reached Kabul today and has been deployed in our Embassy there,” said the government in a statement.
The deployment follows repeated assurances by the Taliban of a secure environment for Indian diplomats if they chose to return. The Taliban have been very appreciative of India’s humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan.
