NEW DELHI: Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde will be the next chief minister of Maharashtra, BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis announced on Thursday.
Addressing a joint press conference, Fadnavis said that he will not be a part of the Maharashtra government but will extend full support.
Fadnavis made the announcement after meeting governor B S Koshyari at Raj Bhavan and staking claim to form the government. The oath-taking ceremony will take place at Raj Bhavan at 7:30pm.
“Eknath Shinde will be the Maharashtra chief minister, oath ceremony to be held at 7.30pm today. After the swearing-in ceremony today, we will have a cabinet expansion and Shiv Sena and BJP leaders will take the oath. I will stay out of the government,” Fadnavis said.
“In 2019 Maharashtra assembly elections, people voted for BJP-Shiv Sena alliance but that mandate was insulted and Maha Vikas Aghadi government was formed,” he added.
Fadnavis claimed Shinde wanted to end alliance with Congress and NCP but Uddhav Thackeray did not oblige.
Shinde, who led the rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray, claimed support of 50 MLAs and said that the BJP leaders showed generosity by making “Balasaheb’s Sainiks the chief minister.”
“Fadnavis could have become the chief minister going by the numbers but he showed a big heart and I thank him. The new government in Maharashtra will get the backing of PM Modi, Amit Shah and J P Nadda,” Shinde said.
“We went to former CM Thackeray with our constituency’s grievances and development work along with advising him on need for improvement as we started realizing that it would be difficult for us to win the next elections. We demanded for a natural alliance with BJP,” he added.
On Wednesday, Uddhav Thackeray announced resignation as chief minister bringing to an end the 31-month-old MVA government.
At present, the BJP has 106 MLAs in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly and Shinde is leading 39 rebel Shiv Sena legislators and some Independents. After the death of a Shiv Sena MLA recently, the current strength of the Assembly is reduced to 287, thus the majority mark is 144.
