KOLKATA: A 28-year-old Kolkata Armed Police constable, on his first day of duty outside the Bangladesh deputy high commission near Park Circus on Friday, opened indiscriminate fire from his SLR, killing a 28-year-old woman and injuring three others. Constable Chodup Lepcha, CCTV footage showed, kept loading and shooting seven times before aiming the final bullet at his own neck.
Rima Singh, a resident of Dasnagar in Howrah, was riding pillion with friend Bashir Alam Romani driving the bike when they encountered Lepcha right in the middle of Lower Range Road. CCTV footage showed the bike stopping in front of Lepcha, who crouches for a while and then shoots at them from behind as the bike desperately swerves into a right lane. One of the bullets killed Rima, who fell off the bike while Bashir was hit on the arm.
Another biker, Mohammad Sarfaraz, a resident of Alimuddin Street who had come to meet a relative in the area, was hit in the hip. There were several bystanders on the road who had a lucky escape as the spray of bullets hit trees and cars parked on the road.
Rima, who was training to be a physiotherapist, died on the spot as the bullet pierced her spine. She was on her way home, where her fiance and his family were scheduled to come in the evening to fix a marriage date.
Lepcha was inducted into Kolkata Police on compassionate grounds after his father, also a Kolkata police personnel, died a year back, police commissioner Vineet Goyal said. “This is a clear case of suicide. We are investigating what led to the incident, including depression,” he added.
