RAMPUR: After Congress decided not to field its party candidate in the upcoming Rampur Lok Sabha bypoll, party leader Nawab Kazim Ali Khan announced that he would support BJP’s Ghanshyam Singh Lodhi. He apologised to Congress general secretary and party’s UP in-charge Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for his decision.
The former state Cabinet minister (in Mayawati’s government) and five-term MLA had unsuccessfully contested the 2022 assembly elections on the Congress ticket against the Samajwadi Party‘s senior leader Azam Khan.
In his letter to Priyanka, Kazim wrote that he wanted to contest the bypolls on Congress ticket, but some in the party “misled” the brass and convinced it not to field any candidate. Polling will take place on June 23, and counting will be on June 26.
“I am at present associated with Congress and will remain with the party. Despite an unfavourable political atmosphere against the party in UP, I contested the 2022 assembly polls as the party’s candidate. I am free to support and vote anyone of my choice,” he said.
Kazim’s decision came after Lodhi reached the former’s Noor Mahal Palace on Monday evening to meet him and his son Haider Ali Khan. Lodhi also met some other members of the anti-Azam Khan group, including former Congress MLA from Rampur assembly seat Afroz Ali Khan, who had defeated Azam in 1996 assembly polls. Afroz Ali, said, “Since there is no Congress candidate, I have no other choice but to back the BJP candidate.”
Kazim is an arch rival of Azam Khan. Rampur’s assembly and parliamentary constituencies have witnessed a political feud between Azam and Noor Mahal for the past 40 years.
